Rhode Islanders to Vote for a Casino in West Warwick

Narragansett Indian Tribe and partner Harrah's Entertainment are trying to persuade Rhode Island residents and have spent millions of dollars for their amendment to be approved which would give them a chance to build a casino in West Warwick.

Everywhere the Rhode Islanders look they see casino advertisements. The ads are promising the residents that the casino would reduce property tax, create more jobs and help decrease poverty.

Despite all the promises about casino taxes, no one can actually say how much money the casino can produce because the state hasn't decided yet on how much the tax rate would be for the casino.

On Harrah's website they have given rough estimates on the revenue the casino would give the state. They claim about $26.2 million for the Providence and $1.1 million for the New Shoreham. Yet the critics say the figures are baseless.

Larry Berman, a spokesman for House Speaker William Murphy, D-West Warwick said, "They would like the people of Rhode Island to decide this once and for all - do you want a casino or not? - with the details to be worked out later."

If the constitutional amendment is approved by the Rhode Islanders, Clare Eckert, a spokeswoman for Harrah had said that the company would agree on a 25 to 40 percent tax rate. But Gov. Don Carcieri, a casino critic said, nothing would prevent Harrah's and Narragansett from asking a lower tax rate.
